I Looooved this book!!!
Beautiful, shocking and kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite RUnner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons - their love, their sacrifices, their lies.
Something I really enjoyed about this book is how it explored the relationships between predominantly male characters. A Father who is definitely an alpha male, struggles to understand his more introvert, studious child, leading the child to battle with his self worth. This low self esteem, directly affects the relationship he has with his best friend and the long term impact is devastating.
One of the things that really impacted me was how a scared child can make a decision in a split second that is so wrong and then, through fear and naivety, be completely unable to make things right again.
My heart broke for both of these boys.
The revelations later in the book made me want to start again with a true perspective and I will read it again but, not yet.
There is a movie out now that I am planning to watch so I will do a comparison review later on.

"For you, a thousand times over"
there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. When you kill a man, you steal a life... you steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a Father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness... there is no act more wretched than stealing.
Better to get hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.
