Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Eleven thousand years ago a god was born. Cursed into the body of a human, Acheron endured a lifetime of hatred. His human death unleashed an unspeakable horror that almost destroyed the earth. Brought back against his will, he became the sole defender of mankind.
Only it was never that simple…
For centuries, he has fought for our survival and hidden a past he never wants revealed.
Now his survival, and ours, hinges on the very woman who threatens him. Old enemies reawaken and unite to kill them both.
War has never been deadlier… or more fun.
I first read this book probably 10 years ago when our local Waterstones recommended it with a box of tissues. I've gone on to read it a number of times since. It's one of my favourites. Sherrilyn Kenyon is the master of tragic heroes that you can't help totally falling in love with.
This book is split into two parts which I'm not going to give anything away about but, what I will tell you is that the first part of the book is quite brutal and will probably make you cry if you're that way inclined. I cried buckets at the cruelty experienced by Acheron in part one and the man he becomes in spite of it will have you falling hard for him in part 2. This book can be quite sexually explicit at times but you can skim through these parts and not lose any of the depth of the story.
Sherrilyn Kenyon writes brilliant characters. She has a wonderfully sharp, dry sense of humour which she uses to full effect in her writing and is honestly a welcome relief at times. Simi (Acheron's demon/tattoo daughter) and Artemis (Acheron's first love and worst enemy) are both brilliant and the fact that they hate each makes for some brilliantly funny moments.
This is one of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series, none of which have to be read in order particularly although I kind of wish I had. Acheron however is very much a stand alone although you will see Acheron pop up from time to time in her other Dark Hunter novels.
This book is his story and it's so good!!

“It's easy to look at people and make quick judgments about them, their present and their past, but you'd be amazed at the pain and tears a single smile hides. What a person shows to the world is only one tiny facet of the iceberg hidden from sight. And more often then not, it's lined with cracks and scars that go all the way to the foundation of their soul.”
