Rebecca by Daphne du MaurierLast night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .
The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives--presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.I first read this book when I was quite young (late teens young) because it's my Mum's favourite book. I remember feeling distinctly underwhelmed by it at the time. I don't know if I was just not in the right mindset at that time or if I just had a better appreciation for the book when I was older but, I read it again last year and had a completely different reading experience. I really loved it. The second Mrs de Winter is a naive young girl who, upon marrying Maxim de Winter, enters a household swathed in secrets. It's hard not to feel angry at the way she is treated by the horrid Mrs Danvers and pity her when it becomes clear her new husband is keeping secrets from her. Beautifully written, I know I will read this book again.

I have never read the book, but saw the film. A very dark and gloomy story.

Yes it's definitely not a happy read Valdy. I just found it quite compelling the second time I read it. Which movie did you see? The more recent one with Lily James?

Oh, I didn't know there was a remake. No, I saw the 1940s film with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. I love Hitchcock's original films.

The remake is actually pretty good. No getting away from the fact that it's quite dark but I enjoyed it regardless.
