A Discovery of Witches is the first book in the All Souls trilogy by the American author and historian, Deborah Harkness. A Discovery of Witches follows the American historian, Diana Bishop, who lives in Oxford, England, where she's doing research on alchemy. She is especially interested in the Ashmole manuscripts and one day while at the Bodleian library, she manage to get a special Ashmole manuscript, which has been lost for ages. She opens it and it's the beginning of the adventure, Diana is thrown into. Besides from being a historian, she's also a reluctant witch and refuse to perform magic. She lost her parents at age seven and grew up with her aunt Sarah and her aunt's partner Emily in Madison, New York. During the book, she meets a vampire, named Matthew Clairmont, who is very interested in the manuscript Diana managed to get her hands on. Matthew is a genetic scientist and is looking into the loss of abilities among the witches, demons and vampires that exist among the humans. A Discovery of Witches is also turned into a TV-show. The first two series can be seen on Sky TV in GB, HBO Nordic in Scandinavia and Sundance and Shudder in the States. I fell in love with the book, cause it's different from your typical fantasy novel. This is for grown ups, clearly and even though I don't understand the more scientific language in the book, then it gives a logical explanation to why vampires, witches and demons exist.

Susanne, this book is on my Goodreads TBR. I think I wanted to read it before I watched it seeing as it's now a TV show. You've just pushed it further up the list haha.

Do it! Hehehe. My favourite is the second book in the trilogy. But the universe as a whole is amazing. The author has a group on FB where she often interacts with her fans. She's even liked some of my comments

Woop. My favourite is Shadow of Night though. ADOW can be a bit slow in the beginning.

Woop. My favourite is Shadow of Night though. ADOW can be a bit slow in the beginning. I'm so glad that you said this Susanne as I would have been getting close to giving up LOL. Im nearly at page 60 and she's only left the library once To be fair it's a beast of a book so I was kind of prepared for a slower start. This is what I love about the opportunity to share about books... keeps you carrying on when otherwise you might not.

My mom thought it was slow too in the beginning, but I told her it gets better and she ended up swallowing all three books hehehe.

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry Susanne but I was really disappointed with this book. It's taken me over 2 weeks to read and even though it's a big book it wouldn't take me anywhere near that long to read a book I was loving. I think the issue for me, is that it's just so unnecessarily long which made it a particularly laborious read. The first part of the book felt like I spending pages just watching daemons watching a vampire watching a witch read a book. On the plus side I felt the characters were really well written, I loved Diana and Ysabeau especially. Sarah and Em reminded me of the two aunts from Sabrina the teenage witch and I thought the concept of their house having this personality all of it's own was great. There was a really good story in the book but it just never really gathered momentum and any exciting bits quickly got lost between too much unnecessary detail. In short, I really think if this book had been about 300 pages shorter, it would have been a much faster paced read and I think I would have had a completely different reading experience and probably would have loved it. The book was just enough to make me excited to watch the series on TV but I definitely won't be reading the next two books.

That's a shame cause the second book is nothing like the first book. Do check out the series cause it might be easier to swallow than the books
