Northanger Abbey by Jane AustenIn Northanger Abbey, a young woman's penchant for sensational Gothic novels leads to misunderstandings in the matters of the heart. Austen's first, this is considered by many to be among her most charming novels.goodreads rating: 3.83

I actually really liked this book. It did take a while to read and some paragraphs I had to read a few times to try and grasp what it was trying to say. I would read it the first time and get to a point where I'd think what in the actual hell have I just read haha. Some paragraphs I had to just accept I didn't understand at all but thankfully this only happened 2 or 3 times and didn't appear to affect the story. There were points in this book where I felt that Austen perceived the world around her in a way that was sort of ahead of it's time. Her understanding of relationships is just wonderful to read. I'm going to state right from the start that John Thorpe grated on my last nerve and Isabella quickly became the source of disgruntlement when she and John persistently rode roughshod over Catherine's wishes and requests. This also was the first indication in Isabella's character that she wasn't going to be the friend to Catherine that is at first intimated. I think my favourite part of the book was when Catherine was riding with Henry to Northanger Abbey and he was teasing her about what she might expect when she gets there. Of course, this led to me completely understanding why she noticed things in her room which sparked her curiosity but it still annoyed me that she felt it was ok to go poking around other peoples homes and possessions. I wasn't a great fan of the ending. I personally would have liked to have read about another meeting between Isabella and Catherine and I would like also to have read about the conversations Henry had with his Father following Catherine being sent away from Northanger Abbey. I suppose I found the ending just a little bit too abrupt. All in all, I enjoyed the read. I always like characters that can provoke more than one emotion in me and a number of Austen's managed to do this. Definitely recommend this for any fans of Austen that haven't yet read it. Oh, also, I think this book deserves a higher rating that 3.83 on goodreads. In fact I think some classics should just be exempt from ratings on goodreads altogether
