Girl with a Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier Well, this book is short. I read it in a day. A day off well spent in my opinion lol. So this book is a historical fiction novel written by Tracy Chevalier who was inspired by the Johannes Vermeer painting - The girl with a pearl earring. In this book she creates a story behind the painting. I actually thought it was a really cool concept and the book is a beautiful read. I think this would hold more appeal to people who are interested in the historical process of painting but really, it's a very readable story that sucks you into the home of an artist and his crazy family. A lot of the characters are just not likeable but rather than being overbearing, it actually just helps endear you to Griet all the more. The book highlights how powerless maids were back in the 1600's and how they were really at the mercy of their master/mistress. I'm not sure that I could convincingly recommend this book but I personally really enjoyed reading it. If you read this book, what did you think about Cornelia? {Spoiler}Oh my goodness was this child an absolute brat!!! I think this is what frustrated me most, that this child was behaving so appallingly and Griet initially felt that she couldn't do anything about it. I was so pleased when she finally did tell 'him' and he actually dealt with it. On a side note, that earring actually doesn't look much like a pearl to me!
